My dad worked with Philips Lighting for a little more then 40 years now, and this weekend we celebrated this fact with a party in the garden of our home. K-kwadraat, a two-man showgroup came to display their fire-toting skills ;)

So, it has been a while since I updated this blog.

Anyway, the pictures from the second conference I shot (Onderwijs Research Dagen 2008) are online now. Check http://www.ord2008.nl and click through to 'Foto's'.

So this is holiday time, lots of time to chill and overthink stuff. Life. Everything ;) So, that's a good thing! Up in a week: holidays in the Ardennen. Up in two weeks: Introductionary week @ TU/e (Beer :D). Up in three weeks: my first wedding (shooting togetherwith a college friend)!

Exciting. After that, I'm going to continue my study. I'm debating with myself on where to go for an abroad internship... I'll keep you posted ;)

Hey allemaal, hieronder wat foto's van het 'verbouwen' van mijn kamer. Heb nu m'n Behringer B2031's opgehangen en tevens kun je mijn mengpaneel zien en de IBM T60p in zijn dock.

Ook is te zien mijn nieuwe geluidskaart die dit alles mogelijk maakt (Maya 44 USB) en mijn nieuwe scherm (Dell 2408WFP) dat zo belachelijk veel licht geeft dat het zelfs flared op de foto hieronder :P

Conference photography

I shot the European Conference on Integrated Optics 2008 (ECIO2008) last week, which was a real challenge for me in terms of professionalism. Exposure & white-balance wise it also was a real challenge, dealing with lots of different light sources and trying to balance in some off-camera flash in a huge room (while keeping the flash hidden from the audience, ofcourse :S)... I'm really pleased with the result however. There could be room for improvement, but there always is and I see that as a good thing.

So, last weekend I went to Zeeland with my parents. They had this show with old cars and planes on the local grassy air-strip and we decided to go watch the airshow. There was lots of stuff to see so I enjoyed myself :) Not a lot of in-the-air plane-pictures tho, because I had no tele with me :(

Old trains running on steam and butterflies

This long weekend I went to Goes (Zeeland) to have a look at some old trains and also to be on them :) Together with my mom, we had a very fun time. LOTS of photographers running around at these events.. I don't know why :-) I guess all I-R-father-/w-free-time-need-to-make-photo's-with-way-to-expensive-cam-I-bought ran around there ;)
We also went with the old steam train to a place close to Goes called Kwadendamme. In this small settlement there was a mexican garden with lots of butterflies. So ofcourse I had to go and take pictures :)

So, the pictures! I only had my 16-45 lens with me, so the butterflies are no real macro's but the lens does quite a good job at close focussing. AF-C was very helpful here on the K10D. I used the AF button to disable AF-C (custom setting) as soon as the focus was right and the AE-L as soon as exposure was set (point exposure) at the right point of the butterfly. Using this technique I got the right exposure almost any time. M(aster) mode all the way baby ;)

The weather today was really nice, and because I had some work to do at the university I decided to bring my camera and shoot some nice shots of our faculty building.

So here are my 4 picks. I hope you like them! :) All shots taken with K10D+16-45F4 @ F8, ISO 400 (oops ;-D), and my B+W MRC Circular Polariser to kill reflections and add contrast to the sky.

I know photographing cats makes it look like I never come outside, which is not completely true.... But yesterday I photographed the cats of some friends of mine.

I'm very bad at names so I can't remember the cats' names either... Anyway, pictures taken with my trusty revuenon F1.2 (@ F1.2 for most pictures)... The lighting was very dim and tungsten so the WB was a bit off. I thought I'd be able to fix that afterwards since I shot raw anyway. Unfortunately for me, the camera was stuck at JPEG 6MP setting. :-( (*smacks self*).

So, this weekend I decided to give my Revuenon 55mm lens a go. I wandered around my parents' house and got the following shots. All shot with the above mentioned lens at some F-stop higher then F2.

Hoge Veluwe / High Veluwe: Looking down from above

So, i had a short holiday to the 'Hoge Veluwe', which translates roughly into 'High Veluwe'. Whatever. There's plenty of nature there, trees 'n the such, which ofcourse I had to photograph during walks in the forest.

I even gave this series a name: Looking down from above (first 4 pictures). More pictures will follow since I also did some portraiture using only 2 bare off-camera small flashes. However, these need some PP before I'll post them in this blog. Have fun!

Ofcourse I had to try my new skyports. Finally - stuff that works without a hassle. This makes it all worthwhile. Do not buy crap from China (unless you simply can't afford more ofcourse)! :)

Anyway, I shot some pictures of my sister. Rain was pouring so we got under some shelter near our home. All pictures taken with the Revuenon 55mm F1.2, which is way too sharp for portraiture at F5.6 :P

BTW, my new Pentax O-me53 loupe helped out in MF, which was a tad bit better then normally due to the zoomfactor of x1.2 in the viewfinder view.

New equipment

Yay, my skyports & other accesoires finally arrived after being stuck in some sorting station for 3 days... I ordered 3 rx and 1 tx. Also added a second lightstand and accesoires so i can actually mount a second strobe (and have my manfotto superclamp for the third light. I also ordered a magnifying eyepiece and this thing rocks on the K10D, giving much closer view to the action (or so it seems ;P).

So this finally gives me proper radio triggering ability without any hassle! No more crap, no more! yay!

Photo guide: DIY Gobo & Grid

We live in Holland. We want a light modifier that brings us specific light when attached to a flash head and that is very small. Specific in the sense that it makes the light very directional. This light modifier is called a grid in photographic terms, or sometimes a honeycomb grid (the one we'll make probably does not go by that term, since the holes are square, more on that later). The grid has a pre over a normal snoot in that it's even smaller (snoots sometimes need about 40cm to make the same tight beam that a grid does). What do we need to make such a grid? And where do we get it? All the ingredients are below in the first picture, but here is a textual list:

A sharp knife or other tool that can cut through plastic and cutting board. I had this already.
Karwei: Black tape (gaffer tape or something alike). 5 euro's.
Praxis: Velcro (both the vel and the cro ofcourse :D). 6 euro's for both.
Any store that has plastic car/plane/boat models: Plastic glue. I had this already, but I recon this would set you back about 2 euro or so.
Karwei: Plastic sheet laths to put on the ceiling. The side of these made perfect sense for a grid! Mine cost 5 euro for a single sheet. Normally these go for 40 euros for 4 sheets, which is way too great an amount. Find loose laths and bargain on it with the store people :-)

Here you can see the actual lath from the side. As you can see there are squarish holes in it and you can actually look through. These holes will be shot at from the side, so we want to stack multiple layers of this to make a grid that covers the whole flash head.

Here you see a few drawings on the top of the board. Note that my flash head has dimensions (SB-24) of 75mm x 41mm. Alas, no exact size is possible but you want a bit of overlay for using filters/gels on your flash head combined with this tool. So I made 2 longer ones of 8cm x 8cm to stick over the head (top layer and bottom layer) and 4 smaller ones of approx 8cm x 5 cm.
Use the knife to cut out the parts. This takes time and energy, and you need to trim the borders to make it look O.K..
Here are all the pieces together. 4 smaller ones and 2 bigger ones. Time to take out the glue!Before putting together the whole thing, put velcro (hooks side) on one of the big parts you cut.

Now put the pieces together. If the glue seems hard to stick, put books on the whole thing and let it dry for a few minutes. If you're done, start taping the outsides to stop light from spilling outside (and it makes the unit look more nice in my opinion). I've also taped the part that comes over the flash to prevent spill light from exiting the unit at the wrong end.

In the next picture you see the part where the flash head should enter the grid. Note: only one side has the velcro to connect to the top of the flash, this thing is light enough to stick on even with the flash hanging upside down ;)

As you can see in the next picture, the squares aren't actually completely squarish but they'll still work great. Note that I have 5 cm of length for the light rays to be straightened out. This is relatively long for a grid (there are 2 cm versions as well)! Also note you can best use this item at maximum zoom setting (for my flashes thats approximately 85mm) for minimum power loss/spill.
Because I had huge amounts of the laths left, I decided to make some light blocking devices as well. These are easy, 10x20cm devices you put on the side or top of your flash to block light in a singular direction (like stray light into your lens, or to prevent leakage unto ceilings/walls that is not wanted). In the next picture you see the device cut out. Putting some velcro on these things makes them sticky.

This is one side, but I made the other side covered in black tape again so this part will not reflect light (or a lot less!!).
In the next picture you can see both my newly made tools. I've also made some gobo's (the light blockers) out of foam and taped them with the same black tape (they are even smaller and lighter).
Enjoy this stuff! Soon I'll add some pictures of these things in actual use so you can see how these influence your lighting.

Dear all, lately has not been a very active time for me. I've done some work for Thor and in a few weeks the new two-monthly magazine Connecthor will be delivered unto students' doormats, of which I've shot the cover picture.

Other then this stuff, I'm updating to new wireless triggers, basicly because I'm sick 'n tired of my failing ebay-triggers which I've modded heavily but to no avail in practice. I spent about 40 euro's in total on them, and I refuse to put more money into it. I've decided to go with the Elinchrom Skyports. First off I'll order a transmitter and 3 receivers (I have a total of three flashes nowadays, one Pentax, one Nikon SB-24 and one Nikon SB-25 unit, still going strong). Also I'm going to order another stand & umbrella adapter. I'm doing these investments because I'm planning to do some paid work in the future which does require some working equipment.

A very happy new year with all the best wishes for everyone!

I happened to acquire a new lens just before going into the new year: the Vivitar Series 1 70-210 F3.5 Version 1 (made by Kiron)! So I just thought I'd post some pictures made by that lens as well as some pictures I made during the fireworks display in Leiden, the Netherlands. I'm sure there were better places for me to make fireworks photographs but I did not intend to spend my entire night photographing instead of partying ;-)

Also, note that the Vivitar shots are all of my cat, which is a lousy ordinary subject, I know, but I'd just wanted to display the quality of the lens. You can't judge sharpness on these pictures but hopefully you get a good idea of general color rendition and contrast. These shots were all taken wide open. Sharpness + Noise Reduction + some minor contrast/exposure is all the edits I've done.

Toy Cars!

So, yet another boring evening at my parents place... And I tried to do some cool shots of my toy cars. I used an umbrella that I had lying around, and it happened to be orange! :) Cool lighting, you might say. Actually the light color was kind of warm! :p

Anyway, some results. I did not have Lightroom/Photoshop, so this is pure K10D JPEG in-camera processing (not my normal way of processing images :P). I made these just to show off the lighting possibilities of a single strobe, off-camera. I did not use a light-stand, just put my strobe on a super clamp.

The cars are on a round piece of glass, again on top of large A1 size sheets of paper.

Look at how the umbrella reflects in the front of the car.. Strange specular highlights anyone?

Next two are bounced from the ceiling, no umbrella.

All these shots were also made using a polarizer to increase contrast.

So this time me and a friend (using a K110D) both used off-camera strobes to see how to get good results shooting this friends little brother and friend (and their motorcycles) as subjects!
We did have quite some trouble getting the wireless triggers to work, and my Ebay receiver is by now declared dead :(

So, here are Paul & Bram and their engines...One of the not-so-many panning shots that was sharp (not supersharp but still).

Did I mention Bram has a hard time smiling on the picture? :)

Dear all, last two days were very nice for an amateur photographer like me. I got to practice my portraiture photography :-). The results are below. For the first time I was able to use my new lighting kit /w Pentax AF 360FGZ and I really like the results. However, already I would like a second strobe... Makes stuff more interesting! :)

Foto's van vakantie Ardennen & Keulen

The pictures... Alas, the order of appearance is not in chronological order, you should actually start at the bottom to follow the progress through our holiday :)

This is the Dom, the big cathedral of Cologne (Germany).

This is the enterior of the cathedral.
This is in front of our camping, the owner of the place also runs an oil-business which I thought looked very 'authentic' and somehow a bit old.
We also went to the castle ruin of Franchimonde, where I took this picture of my girlfriend posing.

This is the graveyard near Spa-village in Belgium (see flag :)).
This is the church building of Vielsalm. What a fun place, where they actually have witches taking over the town each year. They receive the key of the town and then there is a play where important people are rewarded for their efforts.

On a long forest walk we occasionaly (:p) stopped to take pictures. This is one result I specifically like, this light is all natural. It was a dark part of the forest, but the sun lit some nice stones.
This is taken in a small stream in the middle of the ardenes, where I laid on my belly to get a good view :)

A nice mushroom I photographed. This is flashed using the on-board flash, and for this kind of pictures the on-board flash does a very good job actually.
The waterfalls of Coo, very famous in Belgium but they built a huge funpark around the stream.. Which is a pity in my opinion.
This is in the caves of Remouchamps.
And one more.
Waiting to enter the caves, we 'chilled out' next to a small stream and I took this picture of Yentl. Fill flash is with the on-board flash.
Gotta love the polarizer. My first shot during the holidays, and it turned out to be one of my favorites!

Heb mezelf in de vakantie in Duitsland ingekocht in de wereld van het gecontroleerde licht met een lichtstand/plu (zilver) en een Pentax AF360 FGZ flitser. Ook heb ik een Super Clamp gehaald voor moeilijk haalbare situaties voor een stand (of voor als je hem niet mee kunt/wil nemen natuurlijk). Verder was mijn E-bay trigger net binnengekomen dus toen ik thuis kwam heb ik er meteen wat mee gespeelt en het werkt fantastisch.

Owjah, de vakantie was gaaf, hebben dus de Ardennen en Keulen bezocht en gemaakte foto's zullen binnenkort op deze blog verschijnen na bewerking.

LSA? Lens Selling .... Hehe! Ik heb vandaag de eerste keer iets verkocht, mijn kitlens, en dat is allemaal heel prettig verlopen. Altijd gezellig om andere Pentaxianen te ontmoeten!

Verder heb ik te melden dat mijn nieuwste stukje gear op het oog een goede flitser is, en aangezien ik de 540 van Pentax nogal duur vind heb ik besloten de Sigma EF-500 DG Super te kopen (ik wil perse swivel, wireless flash en een hoog richtgetal dus de 360 valt af). Nu nog zien dat ik hem binnenkort kan bestellen ergens.

Geen fotoupdate nu, heb helaas tentamenweken :(
